In December of 1997, Julia “Butterfly” Hill climbed “Luna” to protest the proposed strip logging of the Headwaters Redwood forest in Northern California by the Maxxam Corporation. Her feet did not touch the ground for more than two years, until she finally descended from Luna on December 18, 1999. While in the tree, she endured El Niño storms, helicopter harassment, a 10-day siege by company security and the sorrow brought about by witnessing the destruction of the remaining 3% of our world’s ancient Redwood forests.
